The story of Amsterdam-based startup Metrica Sports reads like a fairytale: three students become friends over their shared love for football, and while watching their favourite sport together they realize they can use the science they apply in university to create usable data that football clubs need. Next thing you know their favourite team FC Barcelona becomes one of their favourite clients. It sounds too good to be true, but it all really happened to Metrica Sports in less than three years time. Founder Rubén Saavedra tells us how they did it when we visit their office at Ace Venture Lab’s Startup Village.
On Friday January 20th, U-Violet won the grand prize at the Startup Tech Event 2017, hosted by the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. The startup is developing the U-Sun, a smart wristband that warns users whey they are in danger of getting sunburnt, effectively eliminating the dangerous risks of unprotected sunbathing. So you can sunbathe without worrying about getting skin cancer. With their idea, the startup unanimously convinced the jury of their business, scale-up and product potential.
“Psst, Fiets kopen?” “Hey man, wanna buy a bike?” Everyone who has been in Amsterdam for longer than a few days has heard a shady person say these words to them at least once. But if the three student-entrepreneurs from LegalBikes have got anything to say about it, the city’s drug addicts are about to lose their main source of income. Bike shops selling second hand bikes for 150 euro and onwards should also fear for their income, as LegalBikes wants to make it easy for everyone to buy a cheap bike, anywhere in the city at anytime, and without fear of getting a criminal record. They are even getting support from Hewlett Packard Enterprise to get them ready for business.
Nocto was one of the five startups pitching at the Paradiso Launchpad Meetup last month. They created an App that helps you find out where you should go if you want to have the best night out based on your desires for music type, atmosphere and attendance. Nocto just released their App through the Apple store on Friday the 27th of January. We wanted to hear all about it from David Franzén, Nocto’s founder and CEO.
In a world where startups pop out of the ground left, right and center, it could happen that you are not the only one that comes up with a brilliant idea. Of course every startup tries to be unique, different and world-changing. But sometimes it happen that 2 startups seem to have very similar ideas about a solution to a certain problem. When we wrote about new Dutch startup Storage Share last month, readers asked us: “But What about Djeepo?” Good point, so this week we compare Storage Share and Djeepo who both came up with a solution: Bringing consumers in contact with each other to put their available storage space to use. But where do these two startups differ?
